2013 So Far….

Well, as per my last post, I’ve joined Slimkicker, which has actually been pretty good so far! I’ve been sticking to my challenge of not eating any junk food at all, and surprisingly I haven’t. I’ve been trying to cut back (not cut out!) carbs and concentrate on more protein and nutrient rich foods. 

The only down side is….I’m bloody hungry all the time! Now, I know this is not because I’m starving myself at all, it’s because I’ve been stuffing my face so much with carbs and sugars over the last month or two, that my belly is probably just used to eating more and “heavier” foods. I think I’ve eaten more salads and vegs over the last week than I have in the past month. Shameful, I know!

It feels like my body is going into shock! Hahhaaa! It may sound strange, but I think there’s some truth to it….I’m waiting for my stomach to shrink down to a normal size again, but in the mean time I just feel constantly hungry, but I’ve felt a lot less bloated (Gross!). I know this may be a bit of over-share, but I’ve been having terrible breakouts on my skin. My face looks like the ground surface of Hawaii…..constant erupting volcanoes! Apologies again, but maybe it’s my body getting used to the change in diet, who knows?! Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Also, I’ve been going back to gym. I’m trying to keep variety in my workouts, so am doing a bit of strength training combined with cardio, although I should be concentrating on doing more interval training. I don’t want to spend my life in the gym, so I want my sessions there to be more quality than quantity. 

I can tell that I’m super unfit though….well, at least I’m trying to change that. I’m feeling a lot more comfortable in my skin (and clothes!) at the moment, and things can only get better.

Wrapping up Week One….

It’s been an interesting week, but I’ve really enjoyed it! I’ve just completed my first ever week on Weight Watchers. So, what did I think?

Well, it’s taken a while to wrap my head around their ProPoints system, but I’m slowly getting used to it. As I’ve said before, I really like their approach to food. It’s not a diet, but rather a more conscious way of thinking about what you’re eating. It also allows you to eat what you want, as long as you don’t go over your allocated points for the day, which means you have to find innovative ways of mixing and matching food. With this in mind, I’ve been trying some new recipes, some of which are definitely keepers (maple syrup and pear pancakes!) and others I’m not too keen on (beef and papaya salsa wraps…blegh!). Overall, I love trying new things and I know how to fill out meals without using up a lot of points, which is great!!

Losing weight....

As for the rest of my 9 Things for November, I’ve been doing okay this week. For 4 days this week, I didn’t even switch on the telly. Some days were a little harder than others, but overall I think I’ve been able to get more done. On week nights, instead of rushing around just before bed time, everything was done and I even had time for some reading in bed. I woke up more refreshed and slept more soundly which was fantastic! It really is amazing what you have time for by doing something as simple as switching off the TV!

Also, because we’ve had the telly off, we’ve been eating at the dinner table more often. It’s really nice to have a decent conversation with Greg without having to wait for ad breaks! Another great result of switching off the telly, is that I’m drinking less wine. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a few glasses this week, but because I’m keeping myself busy in the evenings, I just don’t have time to sit back and down one glass of vino after another.

Gym wise, things haven’t gone exactly according to plan. I only went once this week and felt a little unfit, but I still did a good 30mins on the treadmill and also some cross trainer and weights exercises. I really wanted to go for my first Pilates class on Saturday, but I’m sick again. I gave Greg my “cooties”, and now in a weird twist of fate, he’s given me back my “cooties”. This meant that I’ve basically spent the weekend wrapped up in bed or on the couch, so exercise got shifted to the back burner for now. Hopefully I’ll feel a bit better next week and hit that treadmill again!

Getting back into the Gym routine!

Overall, I’ve had a really good week. I’ve got my second Weight Watchers meeting tomorrow evening and I really hope that I’ve lost a little weight. It doesn’t have to be a life changing amount, but just a little bit for encouragement would be great. So, I haven’t managed all the points on my “to do list” so far, but I’m working on them!

Getting back in the game!

Well, I’ve recently returned from a month off. My parents were visiting me from South Africa and we did loads of travelling….. Wine, cheese and bread in France; Pubs in Edinburgh; and lovely lunches out in London. This has been my reality for the last 5 weeks, and as wonderful as it’s been, I feel as if I’ve undone some hard work of recent months. I’m a little disappointed with myself, but truth be told, I’m not too upset about it.

I wanted to unwind these last couple of weeks, as it’s the only holiday I’ll have until April 2012. So, I can really concentrate on my fitness and weight loss for the next year……no distractions.

I’ve restarted my food diary on MyFitnessPal which is so helpful. I can’t recommend this website enough! Also, I’m on the DailyMile website where I can log all the running and exercise I do. Aside from the amazing I support I get from everyone who reads my blog, these two websites also offer great insight and tools to help me achieve my ultimate goal. If you’re at all curious….have a look!

Well, I’m back and off to the gym for the first time in a month tomorrow. I hope it’s not too difficult to get back into the swing of things! Well, even if it’s hard, it doesn’t matter. I’m back and I’m here to stay.



I am very happy with myself today. Why?

Well, I had a “weigh-in” this morning and found out that in the last 6 weeks, I’ve lost 3.6kg. YAY!! Now, I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s the crucial bit I’ve been waiting for. I’ve seen a drop in my body fat percentage and I’ve gone down a dress size (which felt great), but I’ve been aching to lose some actual kilos. It might sound silly, but it’s the extra bit of motivation and incentive I’ve been needing.

Although my body fat percentage has stayed the same, I’m at least losing something. I’m feeling great and am on the right path to losing even more. I have to say, that everyone should give MyFitnessPal a try. It’s so easy to use and also a very reliable way of calorie counting. It’s just been such a help! I’m becoming much more aware of what I’m putting into my body. Monitoring what I’m eating has also become a lot easier and I’m adding even more responsibility and accountability to my regime, which I find are good building blocks. I seem to have finally found an easy way of managing my food intake on a daily basis.

I did slack a little on the exercise front over the Easter weekend, but did loads of house and garden work. In my mind, I justified that as exercise! 🙂 I was back at the gym yesterday though, and put in a really good session. I really had to talk myself into going, but I’m so glad that I did. I felt great when I got up this morning. Never underestimate the positive effects of a good workout!

Well, I just wanted to share the good news with everyone. I feel as though I can finally say……Yay for me! 🙂
