November….Yay or Nay?

A month ago, I wrote a blog post entitled “9 Things for November”, so I thought I’d have a look at the past month and give you guys a bit of an update on how it went….

1. Attend WW Meetings every Monday

Well, I did okay considering I had to miss one week due to working a late shift and the other because I went to see the legend that is Bob Dylan in concert. So, I’d say that I attended at least half of the meetings. It doesn’t sound that good, but I still managed to lose 3kg this month so I must be doing something right!

2. Plan Ahead!

Again, I’ve been pretty good with this. Although plans kind of went out of the window over my birthday week. This was mainly due to me being out and about a lot, so I didn’t really have much chance to cook meals for myself and ate out a lot. However, despite this, I’ve still managed to lose weight, so all is not lost.

3. Hit that gym HARD!

I’m going to be honest here, and say I pretty much failed at this point. Mainly because I spent most of November with all kinds of illnesses (laryngitis, sinus infection and I managed to strain the ligaments in my right foot!). So, I only managed to get to the gym a handful of times. Not so good, but I’m back in the groove and things can only improve now that I’m feeling better.

4. Start doing Pilates

Giant Fail! I didn’t even go once. I’ve been really bad, I know…..I think it was a combination of laziness (the Pilates class is at 8:30am on a Saturday morning! Seriously), and just mainly having spent most weekends last month recovering from birthday hangovers. I must do better, so watch this space….

5. Switch off the Telly!

Now, this I fared much better at. I still end up watching quite a bit of telly on the weekend, but I’ve been seriously cutting down during the week. The results have been pretty good too….I get to bed earlier, so sleep better; I get more done in the evenings; and I just have more time to chill out and do some reading before I fall asleep which is always nice. And as a bonus, I’ve been waking up happier (for the most part at least….I’m not really a morning person!).

6. Eat at the Dinner Table

I’d say that I’ve managed this about half the time. Greg and I have had a pretty busy month,  so we have been eating at the dinner table quite often during week days. It’s been really nice too, because we have a little bit of “us time” and we get to talk about our day, etc. This is definitely something I’ll keep doing!

7. Less Wine!

Now, this is the surprising one! Much to my surprise (and Greg’s!), I’ve actually managed to drink less wine this past month. A lot less wine. So much less, that it led to my boyfriend asking…“Who are you and what have you done with my girlfriend??”. Hehehee!   I also think this has had a big effect on my weight loss in November. There’s a lot of calories in a glass of wine, so by taking it out of the equation more often, it’ll really aid my weight loss in the future.

8. Paint more!

Another giant Fail! I did no painting whatsoever. Again, it was a combination of laziness and me lying in front of the telly on the weekend recovering from birthday drinking. Bad. I know. I will do better.

9. A little something nice!

My lovely friends Nat & Jo took me out shopping before my birthday. I bought two new tops which I love. I also bought myself a new pair of black jeans, so I got to wear a great new outfit for my birthday parties and I felt great!

So, that’s the update. Overall, I didn’t really do as well as I wanted to, and it sounds like I have loads of excuses for various things, but in the end I still got results. I managed to lose weight and I’ve implemented a few things that have really helped me and that I’ll keep doing. All I can say at this point, is that I can only improve, right?

Although, I’m a bit worried about my regime with Christmas coming up. But that’s a whole new post! 🙂

Wrapping up Week One….

It’s been an interesting week, but I’ve really enjoyed it! I’ve just completed my first ever week on Weight Watchers. So, what did I think?

Well, it’s taken a while to wrap my head around their ProPoints system, but I’m slowly getting used to it. As I’ve said before, I really like their approach to food. It’s not a diet, but rather a more conscious way of thinking about what you’re eating. It also allows you to eat what you want, as long as you don’t go over your allocated points for the day, which means you have to find innovative ways of mixing and matching food. With this in mind, I’ve been trying some new recipes, some of which are definitely keepers (maple syrup and pear pancakes!) and others I’m not too keen on (beef and papaya salsa wraps…blegh!). Overall, I love trying new things and I know how to fill out meals without using up a lot of points, which is great!!

Losing weight....

As for the rest of my 9 Things for November, I’ve been doing okay this week. For 4 days this week, I didn’t even switch on the telly. Some days were a little harder than others, but overall I think I’ve been able to get more done. On week nights, instead of rushing around just before bed time, everything was done and I even had time for some reading in bed. I woke up more refreshed and slept more soundly which was fantastic! It really is amazing what you have time for by doing something as simple as switching off the TV!

Switching off the Telly!

Also, because we’ve had the telly off, we’ve been eating at the dinner table more often. It’s really nice to have a decent conversation with Greg without having to wait for ad breaks! Another great result of switching off the telly, is that I’m drinking less wine. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a few glasses this week, but because I’m keeping myself busy in the evenings, I just don’t have time to sit back and down one glass of vino after another.

Trying to consume less vino....easier said than done!

Gym wise, things haven’t gone exactly according to plan. I only went once this week and felt a little unfit, but I still did a good 30mins on the treadmill and also some cross trainer and weights exercises. I really wanted to go for my first Pilates class on Saturday, but I’m sick again. I gave Greg my “cooties”, and now in a weird twist of fate, he’s given me back my “cooties”. This meant that I’ve basically spent the weekend wrapped up in bed or on the couch, so exercise got shifted to the back burner for now. Hopefully I’ll feel a bit better next week and hit that treadmill again!

Getting back into the Gym routine!

Overall, I’ve had a really good week. I’ve got my second Weight Watchers meeting tomorrow evening and I really hope that I’ve lost a little weight. It doesn’t have to be a life changing amount, but just a little bit for encouragement would be great. So, I haven’t managed all the points on my “to do list” so far, but I’m working on them!

9 Things for November….

After my meeting last night, I really feel invigorated and excited to be starting something new. I know there are a few changes I need to make, but I also don’t want to go completely overboard and propose too much and not do anything properly. So, I’ve had a bit of a think and I’ve come up with a couple of things I want to do & stick to in November. They are……..(drum roll!)

1. Attend WW Meetings every Monday

This will be one of my main priorities this month. I think it’s really important that I stick to this because I need to build up a routine and really get myself involved with this new approach and follow it through. I also like the pressure/accountability of getting weighed every Monday…..hopefully it’ll make me behave over the weekends! 🙂

2. Plan Ahead!

By this, I mean that I need to plan out a weekly menu every week. On a Sunday, I need to sit down and plan a full menu & grocery list for the following week. Not only will this probably save us some money on the grocery bill, but without planning, this eating plan of mine just won’t work. If I don’t make plan 99% of my meals, I’ll just end up grabbing things on the go or making things that are easy and convenient and most probably not healthy. I seriously need to be more organised!

3. Hit that gym HARD!

It’s no use me eating super healthy but then doing no exercise. I have really fallen off the wagon in this regards, and haven’t been to the gym in ages. The (simple) secret to weight loss is: healthy eating + exercise = Skinnier Lynne. So, I’m hitting it this month and I’m hitting it hard!

4. Start doing Pilates

This is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. I went to a class once and that was ages ago, but it just worked out too expensive, so I never went back. Turns out, my gym membership includes Pilates classes on a Saturday morning, so why not? It’ll be a great way to start my Saturday and besides….if I feel tired later, I can just have a snooze on the couch with my fat kitty! 😉

5. Switch off the Telly!

This is a serious problem for me. I could quite honestly lie in front of the TV all day and just keep surfing from one channel to the next. The problem is that I just end up doing nothing. A day wasted! I’m not just talking about weekends, I do this during the week when I get home from work too. I could be so much more productive with my evenings if I just get off that damn couch!

6. Eat at the Dinner Table

I love doing this, but Greg & I just don’t do it often enough. We can actually have a civilised meal and have a great conversation instead of gulping down our food while staring at a TV screen. Definitely doing this more!

7. Less Wine!

Greg actually refers to me as “The Wine Fiend”. I kid you not. The sad fact of the matter is that it’s true. I would much rather give up chocolates and treats than my glass of red vino in the evening! There’s nothing wrong with the odd glass of wine here or there, but when you realise the amount of calories in a glass it starts to take on a bit of a different meaning. This might be one of the toughest to stick to, but I’m going to try. (Insert mental image of me crying over an unopened bottle of wine here please)

8. Paint more!

For those of you that don’t know….I paint. But not hardly as often as I’d like to. Most weekends, I have the best intentions, but that damn TV gets in the way (please see point #5). I’m quite a creative person and painting really allows me to get some of that out on canvas. Painting is also super relaxing, so it’s something I really want to do more of.

9. A little something nice!

I know it’s a bit premature, but I want to buy myself something nice to wear on my birthday this year. It’s only 4 weeks away and I know I might not have lost loads of weight by then, but I just want to walk into a bar or restaurant wearing something that makes me feel great. This is why I’ll really be hitting the gym hard this month and stick to my food plan. I think it’ll be a really nice boost for me to wear something cool on my birthday.

Aiming to change this attitude!

Well, that’s it Ladies & Gents….9 goals for November! I know it might sound like a lot, but they are all pretty much related to one another and none are too far-fetched. I genuinely think these are all achievable/do-able things. So, one month from today, I will report back with an update of how things went.

Excited! 🙂
